Dr. Annette Fleckenstein named 2007 Distinguished Alumnus
Dr. Annette Fleckenstein, Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Utah, has been selected to receive the Kenneth E. Moore Distinguished Alumnus Award for 2007.
Established in 2000, the award is named in honor of the Chair of the Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology at Michigan State University from 1987 – 2001. It is presented annually to a graduate who has contributed significantly to the fields of pharmacology or toxicology.
Dr. Fleckenstein entered the graduate program in 1990, following the receipt of BS/MS degrees in Biomedical Sciences from Western Michigan University. She received a PhD degree from Michigan State University in 1994 as a result of research conducted under the supervision of Dr. K.E. Moore.
Following postdoctoral training at the National Institute of Drug Abuse in Baltimore, Maryland she joined the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Utah, and has risen through the ranks, being promoted to Professor this year.
Dr. Fleckenstein has demonstrated remarkable achievements in research, teaching, and service. She has published 60 peer reviewed scientific papers and 13 invited chapters and reviews. As the result of her scientific expertise she has been invited to speak and to chair scientific sessions at national and international meetings. Her research has been funded continuously by the National Health Institutes (NIH) and she is currently the recipient of a NIH Career Development Award.
She has carried a heavy teaching load in courses for undergraduate, graduate, and professional medical and pharmacy students, and received awards for her teaching activities. Dr. Fleckenstein has also developed and maintained a web site and syllabus for a very popular undergraduate course on “common medicines,” and has co authored a textbook on “Drugs and Society.”
She has been very effective in serving on committees at her university, for NIH, and for several scientific societies. She was recently elected to Council as Secretary/Treasurer for the Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics.
Dr. Fleckenstein will present a seminar in the Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology and meet with departmental graduate and postdoctoral students and faculty on October 10, 2007.
