Dr. Carrie Northcott was recently awarded an NIH Pathway to Independence Award for her project entitled, “Paraventricular Nucleus Signaling Mechanisms in Hypertension”.

This award assists promising postdoctoral scientists to receive research support during both a mentored period (1-2 years) and as well during the beginning of their independent research career (up to 3 years of support).  Dr. Northcott competed with almost 900 applicants for just over 150 awards this year.

The Department takes special pride in Dr. Northcott’s achievement because she received her Ph.D. at MSU.  She has applied for and received both pre- and post-doctoral fellowships from the American Heart Association, as well as an NIH NRSA postdoctoral fellowship to fund both herself and her research.

Dr. Northcott stated, “The Pathway to Independence award will assist my growth as an independent investigator, receive an academic faculty position, and assist me in gathering data for a first RO1 research grant.  This will also move me towards my ultimate goal – running my own independent research laboratory. I look forward to having research of my own making and inspiring others to also love science. ”

Dr. Northcott has received numerous accolades from various societies, published her findings and has presented her research at both national and international meetings.  Visit her home page for more information.

More on NIH Pathway to Independence Program: One of the main forms of funding an independent research lab is through NIH RO1 grants. However, the average age of receiving an NIH RO1 grant is steadily increasing. In response, NIH Director Elias A. Zerhouni, M.D. in 2006 announced the Pathways award specifically to foster young investigators in establishing early independence and funding in their careers.  NIH Announces More Than 50 Awards in the Pathway to Independence Program NIH News Release 30-Nov-2006
