Samuel Pappas awarded National Research Service Award from NINDS

Sam Pappas shown here in the Drs. Lookingland & Goudreau Lab
where he
assists with brain pharmacology research. Sam Pappas was recently honored by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) to receive the Ruth L. Kirschtein National Research Service Award (NRSA), a competitive pre-doctoral fellowship. NINDS provides predoctoral training fellowships to promising applicants. As a recipient, Sam has been recognized as having considerable potential to become a productive, independent investigator in an area fulfilling NINDS mission. NRSA awards for individual pre-doctoral fellows is granted on a competitive basis. Sam had to provide evidence of potential for a productive research career based upon the quality of previous research training and academic record. He proposed a dissertation research and training project that falls into a research area within the scientific mission of the NINDS. The research training experience must enhance the applicant's conceptualization of research problems and research skills.
Receiving the award required Pappas to be working under the supervision of an established investigator in the area of his research. Pappas is formally enrolled in the Physiology PhD program, but is one of the many interdisciplinary students that the Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology provides research opportunities to. Dr. Keith Lookingland praised Sam's progress saying, "I'm pleased Phm/Tox has been able to provide Sam with an opportunity to explore brain pharmacology in a laboratory setting. During his time with us, he has developed considerable skill in several research techniques. I'm very glad he has been recognized for his efforts. The award provides funding for 3 years of Pappas' studies.
