Dr. Brody died June 11, 2007 at his home in East Lansing, Michigan at the age of 87. He was born May 10, 1920 in Newark, New Jersey. Following graduation in 1943 with a BS degree in pharmacy from Rutgers University, he served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He completed MS (1949) and PhD (1952) degrees in pharmacology from the University of Illinois.

Working with his advisor Jim Bain, Brody focused on the in vitro actions of drugs on oxidative phosphorylation. In 1952 he joined the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Michigan as an instructor and rose through the ranks to Professor in 1963.

In 1966 Brody became the founding chairman of the Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology at Michigan State University. He worked tirelessly for the next 24 years to build a strong research and teaching department that services the Colleges of Human, Osteopathic, and Veterinary Medicine, and the School of Nursing. He published over 160 original research papers, 10 reviews, numerous book chapters, and was the co-editor of multiple editions of a textbook of pharmacology, now titled "Brody's Human Pharmacology."

Brody was a member of many scientific societies and was particularly active in the American Society for Pharmacology & Experimental Therapeutics. He served as chairs of the Membership, Able Award and Awards Committees, and as Secretary-Treasurer and President of the Society. He was on the editorial boards of a number of scientific journals, including the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics and Molecular Pharmacology. Brody was the recipient of two of the society's most prestigious awards: The Abel and the Sollmann Awards.
