Application Deadlines
All materials must be received by these dates, and the application submitted by:- Fall semester: June 1st
- Summer semester: February 1st
- Spring semester: October 1st
- Application Fee
The application fee must be paid before you can submit your application for review. In some instances, it may be required prior to submitting materials (LOR's, etc).
Step 2: Compose a Statement
Your personal and academic statements can be included in the electronic application in the area provided.
These statements are the primary way for you to introduce yourself to the committee members that will be evaluating your application. Please include your academic or professional goals and reasons for choosing our MS program.
Step 3: Transcripts
Transcripts from each post-secondary college and university attended listed on your application, must be sent directly from the issuing institution to the Office of Admissions at Michigan State University (after you have submitted your application - so they may be matched). Please send our office an email (phm@msu.edu) when these have been sent out.
Electronic Transcripts
If supplying electronic (downloadable) transcripts, they must be directed to phm@msu.edu directly from the issuing institution or service. Please notify us of any electronic transcript requests you have placed, so we may monitor their arrival.
International and Non-english academic records
One official copy of all records from each post-secondary college and university attended must be submitted as official documents directly from each institution to MSU’s Office of Admissions:
- Transcripts
- Diplomas (certified copy *not original* from the issuing institution)
- Certificates, etc.
These records must show courses taken and grades earned and must be translated into English if the original records are in another language. If a document is translated, it should be certified as accurate and correct by an appropriate public or school official, or sponsoring agency or government.
- Resources approved by MSU for translation purposes:
- 7CLINGO.COM
- This company has a free quote available at: https://www.7clingo.com/quote-request/
- You can upload your diploma and your transcript directly to their system for translation, and have the results delivered to us
- TRANSCRIPT: one uploaded to the company’s website (originals are on file)
- DIPLOMA: one uploaded to the company’s website, one original sent directly to our office from the institution. Have the company forward the translation to our office.
- ATAnet.org: https://www.atanet.org/onlinedirectories/search_translator.php
- Search the ATAnet.org system for an ATA certified translator. Once located, ensure they will work with transcripts and diplomas (some exclude these)
- TRANSCRIPT: one copy for ATAnet.org to complete translation
- DIPLOMA: you will need 2 official copies: one for the translator, one for MSU – sent directly from the institution to our offices.
- 7CLINGO.COM
Credentialing Services
If your transcripts reflect a system other than a 4.0 grading system, our departmental admissions committee will also require a credentialing service to evaluate your grades. Please have these reports sent directly to our department.
These companies evaluate your transcripts, providing an American institution with valuable information about your educational background and its equivalence to a degree issued by a domestic educational institution. Please request a course-by-course evaluation.
Examples of companies that offer these services, include (but are not limited to):
Please note that we do not offer provisional admission to this online program
Step 4: Letters of Recommendation
Three (3) Letters of Recommendation (LORs) are required to apply to our two online MS programs. However, no LORs are required to apply to the Graduate Certificate Program.
Submitting LOR's
- Electronically submitted by authors
Visit https://admissions.msu.edu/apply/graduate-students to start your application. Within the application process, you will be able to send a request to your authors, allowing them to submit directly to your file.
LOR's can be emailed to our Academic Office (phm@msu.edu) by the authors (they may NOT come through you).
- Who do you request LOR's from?
That would depend upon your background. Some suggestions are: current or former professors, employers (supervisory level) and other professionals who are able to supply letters assessing your academic background/performance, critical thinking, analytical and writing skills objectively.
- Plan Ahead
Allow your authors at least one month to prepare and compose their letter. Don’t rush them, and be sure to provide them with the application deadline.
- Be Organized and Pro-Active
Consider providing each author with a folder that includes information about you that will allow them to compose a detailed letter. Items to consider including for their resource are your CV/resume, unofficial transcripts and a copy of your purpose statement.
Be sure to follow up with a thank you note to your authors. Networks are a key to success in any professional field – and this is an opportunity for you to establish yours.
