Dr. Theodore M. Brody, Ph.D.
In 1966, Dr. Brody was recruited to become the first Chair of the newly created Department of Pharmacology at Michigan State University. Dr. Brody and 6 others became the first faculty of Pharmacology at MSU. Ten years after founding the Department, Michigan State University achieved national recognition in both teaching and research for both disciplines. Dr. Brody would go on to serve as chair for 20 years, continuing to add to his already established legacy. He loved being part of the East Lansing Community, where he lived until his passing in 2007. The Department created the Theodore M. Brody Distinguished Lecturer Award in 2008 to recognize outstanding contributions to pharmacology research.
Dr. Kenneth E. Moore, Ph.D.
It was in Dr. Brody’s laboratory in 1957 where Dr. Moore first began studying catecholamines. These studies started him on a career- long path of exploring the effects of pharmacological manipulations of aminergic neuronal systems in the brain. He was recruited by Dr. Brody to become one of the original six faculty members of Pharmacology at Michigan State University. He remained a fixture in the deparment before and after his retirement in 2001, including 14 years as Department Chair. Dr. Moore passed away in 2024. The Kenneth E. Moore Distinguished Alumnus Award was started in 2000 to recognize the outstanding scientists who began their careers in our Department.
